Like many other age defying supplements, collagen pills seem to be presently on the grapevine. Sadly, the collagen in our body does decrease with age. However, you can help boost it, but there’s no one source or a dead cert superfood to take.
Before rushing out to purchase a bottle, shall we delve a little deeper into pills verses nature and see… How can I boost collagen, naturally?

Your body makes collagen, it’s a protein, and amino acids make up the structure of collagen. It’s well known that it can be found in our skin. But it’s also present in our bones, muscles, internal organs, eyes, blood vessels, ligaments, bone marrow, hair, and tendons. I may have missed a few other sneaky places!
Not all studies on collagen pills can agree on the benefits. Many studies were funded by the companies that produce the product. This is a popular practice, and it means that the study isn’t without bias.

Should I try collagen supplements?

Supplements can come with risks as they are not generally regulated. If they contain derived animal ingredients then they may be contaminated with heavy metals. Something else to consider are food allergies. If you do decide to take a supplement, please do your homework. Check reviews, is the product organic? Look at all the ingredients and if you don’t understand them, look them up.
When it’s possible, I would choose food first before supplements
Boosting collagen naturally by eating plenty of fruit and veg is in my opinion the healthiest option and in this case yes, it is possible. But do your own research on this to make a decision that suits you.
If you choose to eat it naturally here are some recommendations.
To help aid collagen and for general health consume the following:

  • Protein: bear in mind that protein plant foods are just as good for collagen production as animal protein. However, they are much kinder to your health as well as animals and the planet.
  • Zinc: Found in legumes such as chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and other beans as well as seeds, nuts, and wholegrains.
  • Copper: Eat leafy greens, nuts and seeds plus asparagus, shitake mushrooms and squashes.
  • Vitamin C: Good sources are berries, bell peppers and citrus fruits.
  • Vitamin E: Mangoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrots, and pumpkin.
  • Biotin: Found in various foods: i.e., cauliflower, carrots, bananas.

As with most things that we need to help support healthy ageing… a plant-based varied diet containing many different types of fruit, whole grains, legumes and vegetables is nature’s way of helping to keep us youthful. If your diet isn’t organic plant-based then it may be wise to consider the quality of other foods. That includes, revaluating meat whether fake or real.

Any foods I should avoid?

Hell yes, please stay clear of sugar and processed food. If you’re thinking of taking a collagen supplement… you could you be wasting your money if your diet isn’t a healthy one.
